BBC WHYS: Day 11

DAY 11

BBC WHYS Today

I’m so happy today. Another nice day in London… after another scary weekend in Manor House… What a place! I hope I’ll never need to pass through it ever again!
I had such a good chat with Alex this afternoon, she’s such a super girl. I also find out we appreciate the same restaurants and that we actually live very close… she’s only down the road from me, in Finsbury Park… much better place than Green Lanes.
I’ve been working with her all day looking for Spanish protesters as during the weekend they held the biggest Iraq protest in Europe, and probably around the world. In fact demonstrations in Washington DC, San Diego and other American places didn’t event get closer to the 100,000 Spanish activists.
Christiane was in charge of the ‘mission impossible’ of the day: finding republicans in Cleveland! There was shock among the team as, also who gave statements a month ago saying that the troops should stay in Iraq, today strongly supported the left-wing idea that troops should leave the country.
My last task of the day was live blogging. Christiane kindly offered herself to blog the Live Live Live post on my behalf during the final arrangements before going live with the show… but she’s ended up being so stressed (poor her!), as the system wouldn’t load her post for at least three times.
a-clrv1.jpgMy maniac fascination for Photoshop today paid out in the office when we desperately try to load a picture from Cleveland, as the team has been broadcasting live from there.
I surprised myself being able to find a picture from the WHYS Flicker account with little instructions: adjusting it, cropping it, resizing it and blogging it in the system for the latest post of the day.
I’d say that the hardest part was positioning the picture in the exact place on the blog… I almost went mad when I noticed the picture was appearing where it wasn’t suppose to be, and I had to reload it at least three times, LOL!
Anyway the show went pretty well and we’ve been overwhelmed by emails and phone calls, while the text have been really scarce.
Top moment of the day was the gathering outside Bush House at 2pm. The BBC staff held a vigil for Alan Johnston, the journalist who disappeared in Gaza Strip a week ago.
We also received magnificent news from the Italian front-line: Mastrogiacomo, a journalist on the Italian newspaper La Repubblica, has been freed after being held hostage for 15days.

Wishing all the best to all the brave journalists who keep the good work going and spread their voices form more unfortunate countries!
