Time to share a nice quote with you. I’m reading this book by Alan Furst titled “The Foreign Correspondent”.
It’s a very interesting book. Set around the years 1938-1939 follows the adventures and struggles of Mr Weisz, a journalist at Reuters, in Paris.
This is a brief extract from the book, a conversation between Mr Weisz and another character, with regards to the way politics and governments were run during one of the most critical moments in the history of Europe, and probably of the world: Hitler ascent to power.
M “Yeah sure, until Hitler gets pissed off at ‘em. And he always does, you know, sooner or later.”
W “They won’t win, because the people don’t want to fight. What war will do is ruin this country, but the government believes in conquest, and so they signed.”
M “Yes, I saw it happen, yesterday. Pomp and circumstance” Millman’s sudden smile was ironic. “Do you know the old Karl Kraus* line? “HOW IS THE WORLD RULED AND HOW DO WARS START? DIPLOMATS TELL LIES TO JOURNALISTS AND THEN BELIEVE WHAT THEY READ.” “
… Just a brilliant quote!
* Kraus’ masterpiece is generally considered to be the massive satiric play about the First World War, Die letzten Tage der Menschheit (The Last Days of Mankind)
