I was talking to a friend about Brazil and I was amazed when, in a matter of no time, he could explain the meaning of each color on the Brazilian flag. SO… I have tried to do the same for the Italian flag; but I soon realized that I wasn’t prepared to answer the question.

I have searched online and looked for the meanings of the greenm white and red of our tricolore… but there seems to be many different interpretations on this.

At the beginning I thought it had something to do with our rich history but then, I liked this explanation the most so, here it is : “Il bianco indica vittoria, prudenza, autorità; il verde indica la natura, l’uguaglianza, la libertà, la gioia ed il rosso l’ardire e il valore” [from Associazione Nazionale Alipini] “White stands for victory, caution, authority; green strands for nature, equality, freedom, joy and red stands for fervour and bravery”

So, now it’s your turn… what does the flag mean to you ?

  1. white and red colours come from the ancient coat of arms of Milano city (a red vexillum on white background) and later they have been coupled to the green colour which from the 1782 was the gamut of the uniform of the Guardia Civile: green color was the colour of Milano from the Visconti period; this family had as coat of arm a green-based drawing
